Artificial Intelligence in Exam Answers and Written Assignments

As a student, you should familiarize yourself with NIH's guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in exam answers and written assignments.

The guidelines are general and apply to all subjects at NIH unless otherwise specified in the individual subject.
You must check if there are specific guidelines for your subjects.
Acting against the guidelines, whether consciously or unconsciously, may be considered cheating.

The use of AI tools is permitted on par with other aids. Remember that AI tools should be used deliberately, and you as a student are expected to submit independently produced text. A text that is entirely or partially produced by AI or others is considered plagiarism, according to NIH's rules for source use and plagiarism.

You must also avoid sharing sensitive data, and it is recommended to use NIH's approved AI tools.

When you submit an answer in WISEflow and Canvas, you should explain which AI tools were used and for what purposes. How you write this explanation depends on the type of assignment or exam.

What is Allowed Use of AI Tools in an Independently Produced Text?

You are responsible for the text you submit, from idea to finished product.

For example, you can use AI for idea generation and themes, preparing outlines, or as a sparring partner.
You can use appropriate AI tools in literature reviews. AI is not in itself an academic source and should not be listed in the literature/reference list.
You can use AI for language editing of your own produced text.
You may not use AI tools. You must be the responsible author of your own text. Submitting a text that is entirely or partially produced by AI or others without indicating this correctly is considered plagiarism.
When using generative AI, it is your responsibility to ensure that the information you obtain is accurate and that any sources are real and relevant to your submission.

Remember!

When using AI, you should always be critical of the information and check the facts.
You are fully responsible for all content you submit, including what is inspired by or processed with AI.

Account of Use

In your submission, you must account for which AI tools you used and for what purposes. You must assess which tools are suitable for the various purposes.
In larger assignments, it may be natural to describe the use in an introduction or methods section, in addition to an AI declaration. You may use the following formulation as a starting point.
In smaller assignments or submissions that are not continuous text, include an overview of the AI tools used – an AI declaration – as an appendix to the assignment.

AI Declaration

The AI declaration should contain a general description of your use and experiences. The account depends on the type of assignment and what you have used AI tools for.
The AI declaration should be attached after the reference list and must start at the top of a blank page. It does not count towards the assignment's length.

Example of an AI Declaration

In the introduction or methods section of your answer, you should write a sentence or two about the AI tools used, for example:
«Various AI tools have been used as support in the work on this assignment. The use of these tools is documented in Appendix A: AI Declaration.»
