You must therefore assess whether and how you use AI, and follow the guidelines that apply to the course and assignment/exam.

You must be aware that using AI tools assumes that you have a good understanding of the material and are capable of verifying the information you receive: "Chatbots don’t make sense – they make words" (unknown).

AI can give inaccurate results – you must be able to assess the quality yourself.
AI should never be used as a source of facts* – always double-check the information.

Ask the course coordinator how AI tools can be used in teaching, work requirements, exams, and assessments

This should be clearly stated for the students in the course, and the course guidelines can be developed in dialogue with the students. Such guidelines can range from "free use" as long as guidelines for academic writing and integrity are followed, to "prohibition" due to the importance of independent thinking and creativity in the course. A prohibition may be difficult to enforce and verify, but it sends a signal to you as a student about what is required to achieve the learning outcomes of the course.

AI tools like ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini can provide you with source references that appear genuine, but in reality are fabricated. Using such false references is considered serious cheating in academia.

If you receive source references from an AI tool, you must always:

check if the source actually exists in OriaLinks to an external site. or subject databases.
read the original source yourself before you reference it. Even if AI provides author names, titles, and page numbers, there is no guarantee that the information is accurate. There is a greater chance that it is not correct! You are responsible for verifying everything you refer to.
