Google Scholar Citations can be used to see which articles are frequently cited and who is commonly referenced within a subject area. It can be useful when you want to identify key articles and researchers, and understand what existing research your assignment builds on.

To use Google Scholar Citations, you need a free Google account. You then create a profile in Google Scholar, where you can collect your own publications (if you have any) and/or track citations of key articles in your field. Citation data updates automatically, but you can also choose to review and approve updates manually.

Profiles can be made public, making it possible to showcase research and track citation trends over time.

Export and further use

Google Scholar Citations has limited export options. Publication lists and citation data can be exported in basic formats such as CSV for further analysis in a spreadsheet (e.g. Excel). CSV is a simple file format for tabular data that can be opened in Excel and used for sorting, organising, and basic data analysis.

Important to know

Google Scholar Citations does not function as a reference management tool and does not support direct export to EndNote, Zotero, or similar tools. For use in reference managers, references must be exported from individual article searches in Google Scholar or directly from academic databases.
