AI tools can help you understand and generate text, summarise, paraphrase, translate, spell-check, brainstorm, and more. If your supervisor asks you to disclose how you used an AI tool, do not cite it as a source — instead, describe its use in the assignment itself, in APA style if you are a bachelor's student.

Example 1:

In this assignment, I used GPT UiO (https://gpt.uio.no/) to generate headings and to improve the precision of the language — both to enhance readability and to support my own learning (see appendix). All final wording and interpretation is my own.

Example 2:

I asked ChatGPT (https://chatgpt.com) for an overview of perspectives on the topic "Sport and sustainability" and received eight suggestions. I selected suggestions 1 and 3, and adapted them to suit my assignment (see appendix).

Using a direct quote or paraphrase from an AI tool:

Definitions and academic explanations should generally come from academic literature. However, if you choose to use a definition or direct quote from an AI tool, or if AI created a figure, table, or image for you, the tool must be treated as a source and cited in the text. Because supervisors may not receive the same response to the same question, you should provide the link to your chat in the reference-list.

Direct quote:

"The development of advanced language models has revolutionized natural language processing in recent years" (OpenAI, 2026, para. 2).

Paraphrase:

According to OpenAI (2026), recent years have seen a revolution in natural language processing, driven by the development of advanced language models (para. 2).

In the reference list:

OpenAI. (2026, March). Title of chat in italics [Description, such as Generative AI chat]. ChatGPT. https://chatgpt.com/share/xxxxxxx

Important to know!
If you ask an AI tool to rewrite a passage from a book, the original work remains the source — not the AI. When using AI to help you understand or rephrase a text, do not use the AI's wording directly. Always rewrite it in your own words. Note that even though AI generates unique responses and does not pull text directly from books or websites, your submission may still be flagged for plagiarism if several students have asked similar questions and received comparable answers.

Warning: Do not use ChatGPT, Copilot, or Gemini to find source references!

These tools can generate references that look legitimate but are entirely made up. Submitting fabricated references is considered serious academic misconduct.

These tools are appropriate for:

understanding academic topics and concepts
getting help with structure, language, and wording

If an AI tool provides you with references, you must always:

verify that the source actually exists in the library system Oria or in Research databases
read the original source yourself before citing it — even if the AI gives you author names, titles, and page numbers, there is no guarantee the details are correct. In fact, there is a good chance they are not. You are responsible for checking everything you cite.
