You should be able to trust your own skills, make independent assessments, and argue for your own positions. This applies both to assignments and work requirements throughout the course, and to exams. As a general rule, it is a requirement that assignment/exam answers are independently produced text. Submitting a text that is wholly or partially generated by others or by AI tools (GPT UiO, ChatGPT, etc.) as your own is considered cheating.

Note! You are 100% responsible for the content you submit – regardless of which tool or source you use!

You must therefore assess whether and how you use AI, and follow the guidelines that apply to the course and assignment/exam.

You must be aware that using AI tools assumes that you have a good understanding of the material and are capable of verifying the information you receive: "Chatbots don’t make sense – they make words" (unknown).

AI can give inaccurate results – you must be able to assess the quality yourself.
AI should never be used as a source of facts* – always double-check the information.

Ask the course coordinator how AI tools can be used in teaching, work requirements, exams, and assessments

This should be clearly stated for the students in the course, and the course guidelines can be developed in dialogue with the students. Such guidelines can range from "free use" as long as guidelines for academic writing and integrity are followed, to "prohibition" due to the importance of independent thinking and creativity in the course. A prohibition may be difficult to enforce and verify, but it sends a signal to you as a student about what is required to achieve the learning outcomes of the course.

The matrix below can be a useful tool for assessing whether and how AI tools can be of assistance. Mentions of ChatGPT can be transferred to "all" other language models.

Warning: Do not use ChatGPT, Copilot, or Gemini to find source references!

These tools can generate references that look legitimate but are entirely made up. Submitting fabricated references is considered serious academic misconduct.

These tools are appropriate for:

understanding academic topics and concepts
getting help with structure, language, and wording

If an AI tool provides you with references, you must always:

verify that the source actually exists in the library system Oria or in Research databases
read the original source yourself before citing it — even if the AI gives you author names, titles, and page numbers, there is no guarantee the details are correct. In fact, there is a good chance they are not. You are responsible for checking everything you cite.
